Sleep is one of the pillars of health, without which the body cannot function properly. Various sleep disorders, such as insomnia, affect a great many people, especially the elderly.

Magnesium has long been used for its calming effect, and many experienced an improvement in their quality of sleep as well. A meta-analysis published in 2021 examined the findings of studies about the effectiveness of magnesium supplementation with a focus on insomnia and sleep quality. In the selected studies, a daily dose of 320-720 mg elemental magnesium was used.

Based on the results of 151 insomniac participants in total, magnesium supplementation decreased the time spent struggling to fall asleep by 17.36 minutes compared to the group who received placebo. Moreover, magnesium supplementation had a positive effect on the length of sleep as well, increasing its duration by 16 minutes.

Nearly everybody has experienced the nuisance of tossing and turning in bed for a long time. Magnesium supplementation is a cheap  and safe method which can solve this unpleasant issue, not to mention its other various beneficial qualities.
